SEA Agency –
CHatGPT Ads

Reach new audiences.

Advertise in the right context.

Make sure you’re visible where decisions are made.

For many people, ChatGPT has become a trusted advisor, providing guidance on what they truly need. That’s exactly where our ads come in.
- Mag. Andrea Hofmaier. Head of Google Ads

An increasing number of people no longer research just on Google – they turn to ChatGPT for advice when looking for a product, planning a trip or searching for the right service provider. Since late August 2026, OpenAI has been showing ads directly in ChatGPT in Austria. Since September 2026, businesses have been able to create their own campaigns in OpenAI’s Ads Manager.

This creates a whole new advertising channel: your ad appears directly below the AI’s answer, right when someone is researching a topic relevant to your business.

As an agency for SEO, GEO and paid ads, our goal is to increase our clients’ visibility in search engines and AI systems. ChatGPT now offers a new opportunity: as well as achieving organic visibility in AI answers, you can secure a paid-for spot directly in the chat. We set up your account, develop ads, write context hints, implement clean tracking and continuously optimize your campaigns.

What are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are paid ads displayed directly in ChatGPT by OpenAI. They appear below the AI’s answer and are visually separated from it, labeled as advertising. The answer itself is not influenced by the ad.

Generative Engine Optimization is about AI systems mentioning or recommending your company or offerings in their answers. While you can influence whether an AI mentions your company, you cannot control it. With ChatGPT Ads, however, you can buy a clearly labeled ad placement next to the answer, and decide on the message, budget and timing yourself.

Ads are shown to adult users of the free version of ChatGPT and the low-cost Go plan. Those with paid premium or business subscriptions, such as Plus or Pro, do not see ads.

The Difference
Google finds what your customers are searching for. ChatGPT understands what they really want.

How ChatGPT Ads work

Unlike Google Ads, ChatGPT Ads don’t involve bidding on individual keywords. Instead, ChatGPT uses contextual information to determine whether an ad is relevant to the ongoing conversation. Whether an ad is shown depends on several factors:

  • Landing page content: ChatGPT examines the page that your ad links to. The clearer and more structured this page is in describing your offering, the better the AI can judge which conversations your ad is relevant to.
  • Ad copy: The headline and description also influence the decision. They should not only encourage clicks but also be precise in their content.
  • Context hints: Additional hints can optionally be added at the ad group level.
  • History & personalization: Unless personalization has been turned off, previous chats and saved memories are also taken into account (currently heavily restricted in the EU for data protection reasons).
  • Location & device: Ads can also be limited to specific countries, regions, devices, and operating systems.

There are currently two ad formats available for ChatGPT Ads:

  • Text ads: The classic text ad consists of a headline, a description, the landing page and image.
  • Product ads (feed ads): Similar to Google Shopping, these are controlled via a product feed and are ideal for online shops.
The goal:
Be present when your customers describe their problem to the AI and look for a solution.

Targeting, campaign objectives & budget

Targeting

The targeting options available for ChatGPT Ads are still limited. You can narrow down by:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Location
  • Operating system

Audience targeting based on user data, as is possible with Google Ads, is not yet available in the EU and Switzerland. This makes a well-crafted landing page, compelling ad copy and well-thought-out context hints all the more important.

Campaign objectives

When creating a campaign, you can choose from three objectives:

  • Reach: as many impressions for your brand as possible
  • Clicks: as much traffic to your website as possible
  • Conversions: as many actions as possible, such as purchases, inquiries or sign-ups. Currently, each campaign can only be optimized for one conversion per campaign

Budget

The minimum daily budget is currently €15 per campaign. Alternatively, you can set a lifetime budget for a specific timeframe. So far, click prices for ChatGPT Ads have been considerably lower than for Google Ads, so now is a good time to test the new advertising channel with a manageable budget.

ChatGPT Ads: The process of a project

Step 1: Review & plan

First, we establish whether your offering can be advertised in ChatGPT. OpenAI’s advertising policies are as strict as Google’s. The following are excluded or heavily restricted, among others:

  • Alcohol, tobacco and weapons
  • Adult content
  • Gambling
  • Financial services and health topics (only with proof of license)
  • Job and housing ads

We will then define your goals together, select the right landing pages, and ensure they are ready for delivery in ChatGPT.

Step 2: Account & verification

Every company needs its own ChatGPT ads account. In addition, the company should be verified, just like with Google Ads. This requires a registration number, company name, address and tax number. We will guide you through the setup and verification process step by step.

Step 3: Tracking

Without clean tracking, there are no meaningful results. With ChatGPT Ads, conversions can be measured either via a pixel or via an API. OpenAI currently supports twelve standard events, as well as custom events that can be defined freely. To enable you to analyze the results in Google Analytics too, we add UTM parameters at campaign, ad group or ad level. This allows you to track exactly which campaign and which ad generated how much traffic.

Step 4: Campaign setup

Now we get down to business: we structure your campaigns and ad groups, write ad copy and context hints, select suitable images, and set up the product feed for online shops. We align targeting, campaign objectives and budget with your goals.

Step 5: Analyze & optimize

The ChatGPT Ads Manager currently provides the following metrics:

  • Impressions
  • Clicks
  • Conversions
  • Reach (unique users)
  • Frequency
  • Spend
  • CPM (cost per mille)
  • CTR (click-through rate)
  • CPC (cost per click)

Combined with data from Google Analytics, we can identify what works and continuously optimize your campaigns.
