Search habits are changing. More and more people are no longer just asking Google — they're turning directly to AI chatbots for advice. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) complements traditional search engine optimization by ensuring that your brand and your products are mentioned in AI-generated responses.

Your target audience is already using ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar tools extensively. Let's work together to make sure they can find you there, too!

Some companies we help to stay visible

When working with agencies, what is really important to me is that there is no client-agency relationship, but rather a proper team feeling. With .kloos I truly felt that they want us to succeed just as much as we do. This created a lot of trust, and with quality work, that .kloos provided, we definitely got to a higher level together.’

What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) refers to a range of strategies designed to ensure that a brand, product, or specific content is mentioned or cited by generative AI systems. In essence, it’s about intentionally optimizing your website for AI-powered search and answer engines.

Alongside GEO, there are currently several other terms in circulation — some used synonymously, others referring to specific subfields. These include: GenAIO/GAIO (Generative AI Optimization), LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization), AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GSO (Generative Search Optimization), some of which are used synonymously and others to describe specific sub-disciplines.

Why GEO is Essential

Search behavior is rapidly evolving due to artificial intelligence — more specifically, generative AI. While traditional search engines index and rank content, AI chatbots generate direct answers to user queries. As a result, the way people search for brands, products, and services is fundamentally changing.

This shift makes it necessary to optimize not only for search engines but also for AI. GEO expands traditional search engine optimization by adding strategies aimed at ensuring that AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Perplexity recommend your company — and that Google prominently features your brand, products, and content in its AI Overviews, AI Mode, and other AI-driven tools.

If you want to remain visible today, you need to show up in AI-generated responses!

AI Assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity & Gemini

Whether it’s product research, travel planning, or evaluating different service providers — more and more people are turning to AI chatbots for guidance. Rather than typing individual keywords into the Google search bar, they ask full questions in Perplexity, seek decision-making support from Gemini, or have conversations with ChatGPT. This could be about your product, your service or even your company.

With the right strategies, generative AI systems and models can be influenced in such a way that your business is mentioned — or even recommended as a provider of products and services by the AI itself.

Despite ChatGPT’s rapid user growth, Google remains the dominant force when it comes to searching for information. However, generative AI represents the first real threat to Google’s search monopoly. Google has recognized this and is doing everything it can to make its core product — search — future-proof.

As early as 2024, Google launched the Search Generative Experience: a direct, AI-generated response that appears at the top of the search results page. Since March 2025, this feature — now rebranded as AI Overview (AIO) — has been available in the DACH region as well.

At the latest Google I/O developer conference, the search engine giant announced that AIOs were only the beginning. A new AI Mode will eventually replace the traditional “10 blue links”.

This means that classic search engine optimisation for Google must evolve, and adapt to both AIO and AI Mode to remain relevant in these new, AI-driven answer formats.

Google is far from dead. But it’s undergoing massive changes.

Different Types of Generative AI

Generative AI comes in different shapes. Various AI systems can be distinguished based on how they work and how they access information — each using different approaches:

Training-based language models (e.g. Llama or Claude) obtain their ‘knowledge’ from the data they were ‘fed’ with. These models do not access the internet in real time.

Search-based AI systems (e.g. Google AI Overviews or Bing Generative Search) rely on the index of traditional search engines. They break down user queries into sub-queries, perform live searches, and then synthesize the results into a coherent answer.

Hybrid RAG models (e.g. ChatGPT Search) combine training data with access to external sources such as search engines, websites, or proprietary databases to generate answers that are both up to date and rich in context.

Depending on how these models function, they can be influenced by GEO to varying degrees.

With a market share of almost 80%, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is currently the most dominant AI chatbot. Perplexity AI follows with around 12%, while Microsoft’s Copilot and Google Gemini trail behind.

Objectives of GEO

We understand GEO as an extension of traditional SEO — in the spirit of Search Everywhere Optimization. The goal of all our GEO initiatives is to ensure that your brand, services, products, and narrative remain visible.

Brand Visibility

Your company or product should be mentioned — ideally in a positive light — in AI-generated responses. The focus here is on branding and creating a first or additional touchpoint along the customer journey with your brand.

Citation of Your Website

Your website should appear as a trusted source and relevant reference in Google’s AI Overviews and in responses from ChatGPT and similar tools.

Narrative Control

Even if your brand is not explicitly mentioned, or if the AI doesn’t display sources at all, it can still be a strategic goal to have your perspective reflected in the AI’s responses. This also helps ensure that facts are presented accurately.

How Can the Success of GEO Be Measured?

To measure the success of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), we primarily track your brand’s presence in AI Overviews and chatbots — focusing on mentions, citations, sentiment, and positioning within AI-generated responses. These factors are monitored continuously throughout the optimization process, allowing us to analyze how the content of AI answers changes over time.

In addition, we also keep an eye on traditional KPIs, such as changes in user behavior on your website and mentions or backlinks to your domain from other websites.
